Join us as renowned architects, landscape architects, and interior designers come together to share their insights and experiences in collaboration design.

The ICAA FL Chapter is delighted to offer this unique opportunity to shed light on collaborations within our own membership, many of which are past Addison Mizner Award Recipients, as we announce our 13th Annual Addison Mizner Award Call for Entries.

Moderator Harriet Mays Powell will discuss with our lecture panel, who has a history of design collaboration, the creative process across the professions of architecture, interior design, and landscape. They will highlight their Addison Mizner Award winning projects and others, and talk about their collaborations over the years through engaging conversation and imagery.

Panel

Richard Sammons
Richard Sammons has a rich background in traditional period design and is an internationally recognized expert in the field of architectural proportion, having taught at The Prince of Wales’ Institute of Architecture in London, Pratt Institute in New York and The University of Notre Dame in Rome.
His contributions include the foreword of the book “The Theory of Mouldings” by C. Howard Walker and collaboration on the recently published book “Get Your House Right.” Richard began his career in Venice, Italy, with the offices of Antonio Foscari and then with David Anthony Easton in New York. He is a founding director of The Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America, Vice Chairman of the Palm Beach Architectural Review Commission and Board Member of the Merchant’s House Museum. Richard serves as Design Director of the firm.

Betsy Shiverick
Betsy Shiverick founded Betsy Shiverick Interiors in 2003 after an exciting 21-year career on Wall Street as a currency trader. Upon retiring, she enrolled in the New York School of Interior Design and immediately began her new venture. Although projects were initially hard to come by as a newcomer, she was fortunate to have her own homes to design, redesign, and experiment with. With an insatiable passion for creating simple, beautiful, and comfortable spaces—much to her husband’s chagrin—Betsy embraced her new path. While their four children have grown and left the house, the family’s dogs and cats still roam freely, something she wouldn’t have any other way.
Betsy’s aesthetic centers on creating spaces that appear timeless and lived-in from the start. Her style is classical, elegant, and warm, with antiques making up 90% of her furniture selections. For those not fond of “brown” furniture, she may not be the right fit. She has a fondness for wood paneling, interesting moldings, Oriental and sisal rugs, a variety of textiles, bamboo, oil paintings, murals, white slipcovered sofas with colorful pillows, striped wallpaper, touches of Chinese or Moroccan design, cozy beds, books, and vibrant color. Plants, particularly large ferns and ficus trees, are her signature touch to complete a room.
Betsy believes that high-quality architectural elements and materials are paramount. Every piece she acquires is meticulously curated for its designated place, with a commitment to scouring the globe for antiques of distinction and purpose. She incorporates unique details like old columns, doors, reliefs, moldings, and flooring, as she believes these architectural features make a significant impact.
Unlike many design firms that employ a team of people for a project, Betsy works solo. Clients of Betsy Shiverick Interiors receive her personal attention and expertise on every project. Her philosophy is simple: if you fill a room with things you love, it will be beautiful. Sourcing and arranging these beloved pieces is her specialty.

Jorge Sanchez
Jorge Sánchez’s interest in plants, architecture, and history has led him to landscape design. Jorge is the principal-in-charge at SMI Landscape Architecture. He maintains a philosophy which incorporates a “botanical garden” approach fused with the historic and classical formal garden design framework, creating exotic and thoughtful design solutions. In addition to creating beautiful, usable spaces, Jorge focuses on the preservation and restoration of old landscapes. Several of his designs have been published and continue to be published in many national magazines, as well as in his books, “The Civilized Jungle” which received the Arthur Ross award from the ICAA, “The Making of Three Gardens.”, and “The Private Gardens of SMI” Jorge has dedicated many years to zoning and architectural boards for the Town of Palm Beach. Recently he received the Thomas N. Armstrong III Award in Landscape Design from the New York School of Interior Design. He is currently a Director of the Garden Conservancy and The New York Botanical Garden Horticulture Committee.
