The Certificate in Classical Architecture (CCA) program provides architects and designers with a working knowledge of classical architectural design. Requirements for completion ensure participants build a broad foundation of skills and knowledge in the ICAA core curriculum. The CCA serves as a catalyst for deeper appreciation and understanding of the classical tradition.

There are four paths to earning the certificate:

1. Completion of the ICAA Intensive in Classical Architecture plus elective Continuing Education (CE) courses;
2. Completion of the ICAA Summer Studio in Classical Architecture;
3. Continuing education courses in approved classes in ICAA`s core curriculum plus additional elective CE Courses;
4. Completion of one of the above options plus approved programming offered through an affiliated institution.

Earn credits toward the ICAA Certificate in Classical Architecture at our upcoming courses:

Sept. 16: Study of Precedents - Measured Drawing
Oct. 21: ICAA Workshop in Classical Architecture
Nov. 18: Compositional Drawing - The Analytic

Architect Rafael Portuondo of Portuondo Perotti Architects will present a 45 minute lecture on Context in Classical and Traditional Architecture.

PANEL DISCUSSION
Moderator: Rhonda Anderson, City Commissioner, and Panelists: Rafael Portuondo, Glenn Pratt, and Peter Kiliddjian will discuss the big picture of context, characteristics, meaning and relevance of Mediterranean Architecture in our City Beautiful of Coral Gables.
There will be a 15 minute Question & Answer session followed by a Cocktail Reception.

City Historic Preservation Planner
City of West Palm Beach

Friederike Mittner, AICP, is the City Historic Preservation Planner and State Certified Local Government Coordinator for the City of West Palm Beach, Florida. She has served in this capacity for nearly twenty years protecting and overseeing more than 5,000 cultural resources, 20 historic districts, and 46 individually designated sites. Ms. Mittner worked on the resurveying of the City’s existing historic districts, designation of new districts and sites on both the local and National Register, completed Section 106 reviews and coordinated the regulations for building size, scale, and mass within the City’s historic neighborhoods. This process included an intensive public outreach component. Ms. Mittner served as President of the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation and worked as a trainer with the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions. In 2022, she received the planning profession’s highest honor by being named to the prestigious American Institute of Certified Planners College of Fellows for her outstanding achievements in urban planning. She holds a Master of Science in Architectural Studies from the University of Florida with a specialization in historic preservation. She meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards in Architectural History.

Jaime Correa is the Director of the Undergraduate Program in Architecture, an Associate Professor in Practice, and the former Director of the Master of Urban Design at the School of Architecture of the University of Miami. He has a Master of Architecture and a Master of City Planning from the University of Pennsylvania. He has taught, lectured and exhibited internationally. He is one among the fourteen architects and town planners that launched the American New Urbanism movement, one of its most important promoters, and one of its most significant critics.

His practice, Jaime Correa and Associates, integrated with his teaching and writings, continues to bring students a collection of un-built theoretical projects, books, manifestos and pamphlets which explore the intersection between architecture, art, philosophy, culture, and urbanism. Today he inaugurates a new chapter in teaching where classical and traditional virtue and value are integrated with responsive environmentalism and cultural urbanism. For these reasons, and others not mentioned in this limited description, the ICAA Florida Chapter is honored to recognize Mr. Jaime Correa for his contribution to education with an Addison Mizner Medal for excellence in the category of Pedagogy.

The Hon. Hilary M. Weston and late husband Galen Weston, have dedicated more than thirty years to the founding, development, and stewardship of the community of Windsor, a highly influential New Urbanist town located in Vero Beach, Florida. Conceived in 1989, Windsor was bold, departing sharply from conventional residential development in the United States, proving that privacy was desirable, and did not require a larger lot size. Its success set a precedent for compact walkable town planning and illustrated a restrained charm never quite seen before through its use of only a few enduring, vernacular materials. A new term, Anglo-Caribbean, was born. Windsor’s legacy of community minded building, integrated with and respectful of nature, continues to unfold, inspiring architecture and urbanism not only in the State of Florida but far beyond. To quote Andres Duany, of DPZ CoDESIGN, and Windsor town planner, “New Urbanism has not evolved so much since Windsor, it has evolved towards Windsor.”

For these reasons, the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art Florida Chapter is honored to award The Hon. Hilary M. Weston and Mr. W. Galen Weston the 2022 Addison Mizner Medal in the category of Patronage for their promotion of excellence in Classical and Traditional Architecture and Urbanism in the State of Florida.
