Join us for a walking tour in Palm Beach’s Mid-Town neighborhood adjacent to renowned shopping street Worth Avenue.  We will study the composition of several unique multi-family and mixed-use building types, how these fit in with the historic urbanism while also allowing more density among single family residences.  We will also study the scale, mass, spatial organization and the role of semi-pubic space.
This walking tour explores the role of historic multi-family residential buildings within the urbanism, architecture, and daily life in Palm Beach, Florida.  Led by Architect Richard Sammons, the tour focuses on how the incorporation of these building types within the planning of a town community promotes the health, safety, and welfare for residents in terms of active living, social interaction, civic engagement, sense of belonging, and quality of life.  In analyzing these examples, participants will gain a greater understanding of how utilizing these multi-family typologies in urban planning can promote sustainability, a mix of uses, increased density, walkability, decreased reliance on motor vehicles, a vibrant public realm, and “eyes on the street” security.  In contrast to massive scale multi-family prevalent today, these traditional typologies utilize more human scale and proportion, and create variety in the pedestrian experience that innately elevates the human experience.  Incorporations of these typologies also allow for a range of income within a given neighborhood, and ability for future adaptive reuse.

1.5 Credits Towards The Certificate In Classical Architecture (Core Curriculum – Building Arts) | Submitted For 1.5 AIA CES Learning Units
The experiential course delves deeply into the technical and creative processes that defines the industry, craft, and artistry of metal working with Louis Beltran and Valentina Beltran.
This immersive session offers an exploration of the intersection between architectural design and craft of metalwork. Through case studies and crafting demonstrations, the course material will serve to encapsulate the design approach, the artisanal imprint, technical expertise, and collaboration with architects, designers, and builders.
The course will address the practical and aesthetic merits of using various wrought, forged, cast, or milled metalworks in an architectural setting. Participants will explore the collaborative design process – via concept sketches, samples, and mockups – that is needed in the onset of a project to manage both vision and expectations. Craftsmen, artisans, and project managers will then be on hand to describe, demonstrate and exhibit the methods and skills needed in the successful delivery of a given installation, product, or functional element.

NEW SUBMISSION DEADLINE:
FRIDAY, JANUARY 5, 2024 AT 5 PM EST.
The Florida Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art is pleased to announce our 12th Annual Addison Mizner Award Design Competition for Excellence in Classical and Traditional Architecture. The awards program is intended to celebrate individuals and design firms in Florida and the Grand Caribbean who excel in the advancement and promotion of the ideals of classicism and traditional design in architecture, urbanism and the allied arts. The awards are named for Addison Mizner, the architect whose civic and domestic works defined the standards of excellence in composition and craftsmanship for classical and traditional design in the early years of urban development in Florida. Addison Mizner’s introduction of the Spanish Colonial and Mediterranean styles left an indelible mark on the architecture and urban cultural history of Florida and, to this day, delights those who visit his buildings and urban places.
