Weekend of Learning at Alys Beach: Urbanism in the Panhandle
Khoury & Vogt Architects (KVA) was formed in 2001 in Miami by Erik Vogt and Marieanne Khoury as a practice in architecture, urban design, and town planning. Erik received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Miami and Master of Architecture from Yale University. Marieanne received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Wisconsin (after studying for 3 years at L’Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris, France) and has a Master of Architecture and Master of Urban Planning from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. Both are licensed architects working throughout the country. The practice, currently based in Alys Beach, Florida, engages projects in a variety of scales, programs, and locales. Each is strongly rooted in enduring types and forms that have developed over time to serve both the individual inhabitant at the scale of the building and shape the individual building at the scale of the city.
This grounding in typological tradition allows for an exploration of architectural character and language that, while deploying the principles of classical composition, offers a synthesis of modern and vernacular styles, often inflected by the influence of the tropics and Mediterranean. In all cases, the work strives to partake in equal parts both tradition and invention and to instill in the inhabitant a sense of comfort and delight. Their work has received numerous awards and accolades, and their work has been extensively published. In 2023, they were awarded the prestigious annual Arthur Ross Award for their body of work by the ICAA (The Institute of Classical Architecture and Art) that recognizes excellence in the classical tradition, and in 2024, Marieanne was awarded the annual 2024 Barranco Award by the Urban Guild for her work as Town Architect in Alys Beach.
Fernando Wong has been called “one of the best landscape designers in the world” by the Chelsea Design Centre in London, “one of the most influential landscape designers in America” by Elle Décor, “a genius with the soul of a poet” by Garden Design Magazine, a “landscape legend” by Forbes, and “the creative mind behind Miami’s lushest landscapes” by Architectural Digest. His television series, Clipped with Martha Stewart, can be streamed on HGTV and Discovery+, and his work has been featured on The Today Show as well as in leading design publications worldwide. His book The Young Man and the Tree from Vendome was published in 2025.
Tim Johnson is the CEO of Fernando Wong Outdoor Living Design, an award-winning boutique landscape architecture firm he founded with Fernando in Miami Beach twenty years ago. The firm has grown every year since its inception and opened a second Palm Beach office in 2012. In addition to residential projects around the world, commercial designs include the Four Seasons Hotel at the Surf Club in Miami, the Four Seasons Resort in Palm Beach, the Four Seasons Private Residences in Fort Lauderdale, the Gasparilla Inn & Beach Club in Boca Grande, the Seminole Golf Club, the Starwood Luxury Collection Bardo and Mansion Hotels in Savannah, the Lyford Cay Club, and a national park for the Bahamian government.
