ICAA FL A Day in Harbour Island
4 credits towards the Certificate in Classical Architecture (Building Craft) & 4 AIA CES Learning Units | HSW
The ICAA Florida Chapter invites you to a full day of immersive education in Harbour Island as led by Steve and Wanda Mouzon, authors of the award-winning book A Living Tradition [Architecture of the Bahamas], and interior designer, Amanda Lindroth. As the oldest settled island by Loyalists from North America, Harbour Island showcases Bahamian vernacular architecture, influencing design throughout the Bahamas and beyond.
The morning begins at Java House with a lecture by Steve and Wanda, discussing the making of their book and examining the historical architectural details of the Bahamas, their precedents, and their role in modern construction. They will explore the evolution of the Anglo-Caribbean style, the challenges of designing on an island, and how sustainability is embedded in Bahamian building practices. On an island where resources are limited, builders must create with longevity in mind—leading to efficient, low-waste construction. Over lunch, panelists Amanda Lindroth, Matthew Carter, Kiko Sanchez, and Cecilia de Grelle will discuss working on the island, after which Amanda and Steve will guide tours of the island by golf cart. Through firsthand experiences, participants will see how transportation constraints, logistics, and community collaboration shape the uniquely built environment of the Bahamas.
The day concludes with cocktails at Hibiscus Hill, home of India Hicks, followed by dinner hosted by Amanda Lindroth.
Join us for this enriching experience and gain a deeper understanding of architecture, culture, and sustainable design in a truly remarkable setting!
Travel Information
Participants are expected to book their own travel to and from Harbour Island, book their own accommodations, and a golf cart. The nearest airport is North Eleuthera. From there, it is a short taxi to the dock, then a short ferry to the island, paid by cash only. Small charters can also be coordinated amongst members separately, should that be desired.

AMANDA LINDROTH
AMANDA LINDROTH DESIGN
Growing up in Florida in the 1970’s, Amanda experienced South Florida at a magical moment. The style, architecture and climate would have a lasting influence on her work. Through her 20’s, Amanda lived in Paris, worked for WOMEN’S WEAR DAILY and W MAGAZINE in NY and was head of PR for Gucci in London. In her 30’s, Amanda moved to Nassau and applied her design eye to her own homes and then to properties associated with her husband Orjan Lindroth’s development company, and eventually for friends who became clients. Her firm now has three decorating offices in Nassau, Palm Beach, and Charleston, with clients on both coasts and throughout the Caribbean. Amanda is a lover of classical architecture, especially that which has been adapted for tropical climates. She is known for her timeless interiors, layered with comfort and breezy elegance. Amanda’s late husband, Orjan Lindroth, was an active member of the ICAA and was the Recipient of the Addison Mizner Award for Patronage in 2012. Orjan also sponsored The Living Tradition volumes, written by Steve Mouzon. Amanda’s work has been published by Vendome in two books, Island Hopping and Island Dreaming, and feature many of her most prominent projects to date, including The Dunmore hotel on Harbour Island. You can also find Amanda’s design course “Design Interiors for Entertaining” on Create Academy.
STEVE AND WANDA MOUZON
MOUZON DESIGN
Steve and Wanda’s award-winning book A Living Tradition [Architecture of The Bahamas] sets the standard for a new type of pattern book that is principle-based instead of taste-based, and therefore contributes to the creation of new living traditions. Steve is an architect, planner, and author. He and Wanda are the principals of Mouzon Design, which produces a number of town-building tools and services, including Town Architect services for neighborhoods, cities, and universities around the country. As a result of several successful publications, Steve travels around the world lecturing on building sustainable, lovable, and walkable places. Steve and Wanda began the Original Green initiative, with the goal of recovering and advancing patterns of sustainability that kept humanity alive until the Thermostat Age and the emergence of Gizmo Green. Steve and Wanda’s book, the Original Green, frames sustainability in common-sense, plain-spoken terms. Bobby Kennedy, Jr. wrote the Foreword. Steve has collaborated repeatedly with other notables, including Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk of DPZ CoDesign and the King’s Foundation for the Built Environment, which is King Charles’ organization.

CECILIA DE GRELLE
LANDSCAPE DESIGN
Cecilia de Grelle, a native of Chile, discovered her passion for plants and design early in life. After completing her initial education in Chile, where she graduated as an Agricultural Engineer, Cecilia moved with her family to Miami where she pursued a master’s degree in landscape architecture at Florida International University. This experience helped refine her design skills and knowledge of the native Florida ecosystem setting the stage for a successful career. Her work blends the natural beauty of tropical environments with meticulous design, creating luxurious, harmonious landscapes that are both visually stunning and functional. Her artistry and skill in this domain were honored in 2013 when she received the Addison Mizner Award for Landscape Design from the Institute of Classical Architecture.
