The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art Florida Chapter is pleased to announce our Annual Addison Mizner Award Design Competition for Excellence in Classical and Traditional Architecture. The Addison Mizner Awards was founded in 2012 to celebrate the achievements of the finest practitioners and design firms who excel in the advancement and promotion of the ideals of classicism and traditional design in the fields of Architecture, Interior Design, Landscape Architecture, Urbanism, as well as, Craftsmanship and the Allied Arts. The awards are named for Addison Mizner, the architect whose civic and domestic works defined the standards of excellence in composition and craftsmanship for classical and traditional design in the early years of urban development in Florida.
Recipients are selected annually by a jury of peers selected from among architects, designers and academics recognized for their knowledge of and experience in the practice and theory of classical and traditional architecture through a blind adjudication process.
Jury Process
Jurists will award a total of (10) projects across all (23) categories, with no more than (1) project awarded in any category. Not all categories will be awarded. These ten projects will constitute the most exemplary projects in our region. Jurists are encouraged to move a project into another category if they deem it is more appropriate.

*Introduced last year, the Legacy Award addresses a significant principle of Classical and traditional architecture: its enduring timelessness and ability to integrate studied innovation judicially into the system of its cannons over time. Classicism is a living tradition, understood over a relevant arc of time and not concerned with what is fleeting, transitory or inconsequential. This award recognizes exemplary works. Unlike all other AMA categories, Legacy submissions are not anonymous: entrants must identify the project’s full authorship and include a 400–500 word essay making the case for the award, along with a bibliography of any awards, publications, or scholarship the project has received.
The Jury process considers the following in their deliberations:
Classical design is that portion of the spectrum of traditional design which has achieved the most articulate, and most refined expression.
High Classical design is often reserved for society’s most important structures, such as government and institutional buildings, places of worship, memorials, or museums.
Vernacular design often represents regional building typologies and uses of regional materials. Vernacular structures may have only a few explicitly classical elements, but they should observe the conceptual, compositional, and tectonic principles of classical design.
