Come learn more about the building arts with the Y&EP groups at their next event: The Art of French Polish

An overview of the craftsmanship of antique restorations and fine custom finishes provided by Thomas Riley Artisans’ Guild and Acanthus International, Inc. with instruction by Mark Billane to educate and introduce young and emerging professionals to time honored trades that are slowly disappearing. Participants will be able to try their hand at the French Polish on their own candleholder (shown above) that they will be able to take home.

Mark Billane is an internationally recognized master wood finishing artist. Mark is the co-owner and operator of Acanthus International, one of the world’s leading specialized wood refinishing and antique restoration companies, that produces unique and beautiful wood finishes to clients all over the world.

Students will be required to bring and wear facial coverings/masks, unless eating or drinking, adhering to all COVID-19 mandated PPE Protocol per Palm Beach County. Instructor will provide aprons, gloves, all class materials, and refreshments. Instructor will provide instructions and handouts for students on the day of the course to take home.

What You Will Learn

 
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

    1. Students will be able to identify different kinds of finishes, from French polishing, traditional and contemporary finishes.
    2. Students will understand the basic application of different types of wood stains and their uses.
    3. Students will understand limitations of finishes in connection with wood type, different substrates, and design.
    4. By the end of the course, participants will understand the steps of a French polish and be able to conduct some of the steps themselves.
