This week’s subject: Cummer Museum & Gardens, Jacksonville, FL

The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens is the largest fine arts museum in Northeast Florida. The Cummer was established in 1958, when art collector, garden enthusiast and civic leader Ninah Cummer bequeathed her art collection and riverfront home to create a museum. Today, the core collection of 60 pieces from Mrs. Cummer’s estate has grown to include more than 5,000 works of art. In addition, The Cummer houses one of the most significant collections of Meissen porcelain in the United States. The Museum boasts some of the most important and delightful gardens in Northeast Florida.

Idyllically located on the banks of the St. Johns River, the Gardens have a fascinating history stretching back more than 100 years and bear the imprint of some of the foremost names in landscape design and horticulture, including Ossian Cole Simonds, Ellen Biddle Shipman, Thomas Meehan and Sons and the fabled Olmsted firm. The involvement of these prestigious firms gives national importance to the Cummer Gardens. Throughout the year, the gardens are ablaze with rare horticultural specimens nestled under a canopy of mature live oak trees. In addition to the lush plantings, features such as reflecting pools, fountains, arbors, antique ornaments and sculpture help create a special outdoor space the provides a perfect complement to the Museum’s Permanent Collection. The gardens are now one of the glories of the Museum and are listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
