Florida Summer Sketch Tour: Bok Tower Gardens
Join us for our FLORIDA SUMMER SKETCH TOUR,
a weekly virtual sketching exercise
This Week’s Subject: Bok Tower Gardens, Lake Wales, FL
These gardens and subsequent structures were started in Lake Wales, Florida in 1921.
Edward W. Bok, editor of Ladies Home Journal along with his wife, Mary Louise Curtis Bok, were inspired to begin this endeavor while visiting the area during their winter vacations in Florida.
Many craftsmen and designers were involved in the vision of the Gardens. The Gardens themselves were designed by the great American landscape architect Fredrick Law Olmsted, Jr., who designed many American landmarks such as the Jefferson Memorial and the National Mall.
The famous tower was designed by American architect Milton B. Medary. This tower is a unique blend of both Gothic and Art Deco with a playful nod to animals of the woods as ornamentation. The tower also serves as a 60 bell carillon, hence the nickname “Singing Tower.”
