Join the ICAA Mosaics and Palmettes for this Hands-on Workshop session in Riviera Beach! Hosted by the ICAA FL Young and Emerging Professionals, this event promises to ignite your passion for traditional architecture and foster a community of like-minded creatives. This course introduces students to the craft of plaster work and the process by which design transfers from Architect to Craftsman. This skill is vital for a successful dialogue between Architecture and the Building Arts.

Students will be instructed on the uses of plaster as well as its merits in expressing traditional elements. Through demonstration, prototypes, and overview of tools and media, students will understand not only the capabilities and properties of plaster, but be able to learn about it using a hands-on approach by pulling the plaster themselves.

All materials required will be provided by the instructor. Please dress in attire you don’t mind getting dirty along with closed toed shoes.

The MOSAICS and PALMETTES are comprised of young & emerging professionals, students, and enthusiast members of the ICAA FL Chapter who are dedicated to advancing the appreciation of the classical tradition in architecture, interior design, landscape design, urbanism, and the allied arts. The groups are designed to create and foster new and growing relationships with those who are starting out in the workforce and for those who are already established in the workforce. The goals of both groups are to assist young and emerging professionals in pursuing their career goals, opportunities, and business connections through social events, educational courses, and mentoring. Instructor:

Foster C. Reeve attended Marlboro College in Marlboro, VT where he received a BA in Fine Art (classical sculpture) along with a Mathematics minor. Moving to NYC in 1984 Foster worked in construction to support his art, and in 1988 enrolled in Parsons School of Design to pursue his Master of Fine Art (classical painting) in the Beaux Art style atelier program lead by Leland Bell and Paul Resika.
After 30 years of exploration and executed work Foster and his amazing team have been the recipients of the Trumbauer Award, the Mizner Award, and the Bulfinch Award, all for excellence in craftsmanship. Foster is a board member of the Institute for Classical Architecture and Art, and is on the preservation committee of Old Westbury Gardens, where he helps oversee the restoration of the Phipps mansion. Foster dedicates much time to educating craftsmen, builders and designers in the modern techniques and uses of plaster.
FRA Plaster has 100+ employees and factories in Riviera Beach, FL, Sante Fe Springs CA, and Brooklyn, NY. The Brooklyn facility is also the home of an 10,000 sf art studio staffed with 7 sculptors and directed by the very talented Emily Bedard and Kellie Pereira.

What You Will Learn

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

1. Develop a sensibility for the relative capacities and physical properties of plaster and its impact on the design, proportion and use in the building trades
2. Identify opportunities to implement gypsum-based plaster as it relates to specifying for fire-rated assemblies and and indoor air quality
3. Compare the properties of gypsum plaster with alternatively used materials such as lumber or lime plaster with regards to renewability and sustainability
4. Summarize the processes used in the gypsum plaster fabrication, installation, and finishing processes
