SUMMARY:Palm Beach Multi-Family Walking Tour With Richard Sammons
DESCRIPTION:Palm Beach Multi-Family Walking Tour With Richard Sammons\nMID-TOWN Walking Tour & Lecture\n2 Credits Towards The Certificate In Classical Architecture (Elective) | Submitted For 2 AIA CES Learning Units\n \n \n \n \n \n January 21\, 20249:00 – 11:00 am \nCHANGE — Meet at the Worth Avenue Clock Tower \n423 S Ocean Blvd\, Palm Beach\, FL 33480 \n \n \n \n \n \n Join us for a walking tour in Palm Beach’s Mid-Town neighborhood adjacent to renowned shopping street Worth Avenue.  We will study the composition of several unique multi-family and mixed-use building types\, how these fit in with the historic urbanism while also allowing more density among single family residences.  We will also study the scale\, mass\, spatial organization and the role of semi-pubic space. \nThis walking tour explores the role of historic multi-family residential buildings within the urbanism\, architecture\, and daily life in Palm Beach\, Florida.  Led by Architect Richard Sammons\, the tour focuses on how the incorporation of these building types within the planning of a town community promotes the health\, safety\, and welfare for residents in terms of active living\, social interaction\, civic engagement\, sense of belonging\, and quality of life.  In analyzing these examples\, participants will gain a greater understanding of how utilizing these multi-family typologies in urban planning can promote sustainability\, a mix of uses\, increased density\, walkability\, decreased reliance on motor vehicles\, a vibrant public realm\, and “eyes on the street” security.  In contrast to massive scale multi-family prevalent today\, these traditional typologies utilize more human scale and proportion\, and create variety in the pedestrian experience that innately elevates the human experience.  Incorporations of these typologies also allow for a range of income within a given neighborhood\, and ability for future adaptive reuse. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Materials\n\nSketchbooks and pencils recommended.\nCome prepared with comfortable walking shoes and weather appropriate attire.\n\nWhat you Will Learn\nAt the end of the course\, participants will be able to: \n\n Identify and understand the benefits in use of scale and composition of several multi-family building types such as the U-court\, duplex\, 4-plex\, 6-plex\, loft building typologies – seeing exemplary cases of these building types in the Palm Beach vernacular.\nUnderstanding of how these types can be incorporated into small town urbanism to add density and variety in income among other single family residences while maintaining a sense of scale and belonging within the urban fabric.\nUnderstanding of these building typologies role in the public realm – how they meet the street façade or introduce semi-public shared spaces within their respective lots.\nGain an understanding of the tangible measures in which these building types improve the wellbeing of occupants and neighbors including increased social interaction\, more active lifestyle\, less reliance on motor vehicles\, walkability\, and “eyes on the street” security.\n\n \n \n \n \n \n Instructors\nRichard Franklin Sammons is an internationally recognized expert in the field of architectural proportion\, having taught at the Prince of Wales’s Institute of Architecture in London (now The Prince’s Foundation)\, Pratt Institute in New York\, and the University of Notre Dame in Rome.
