SUMMARY:Spring Studio - The Elements of Classical Architecture: The Doric Order
DESCRIPTION:The Elements of Classical Architecture: The Doric Order\nHosted by the Florida Chapter \n5 AIA Learning Units|Elective and 5 credits towards the Certificate in Classical Architecture\n  \nActing as a base to the wider canon of classical architecture\, the five classical orders have been used since antiquity as a means of proportioning buildings in a harmonious way\, while simultaneously giving logic and meaning. The purpose of this course is to provide an in-depth study of the Doric Order\, including its history\, proportioning\, and meaning. The history portion will cover the evolution of this order from its roots in Ancient Hellenic Cultures in the near East through its rediscovery in the modern-day movement of New Classicism. The study of Doric proportions will include a hand-drawn tutorial in which participants will compose the base\, capital and entablature of the order according to the American academic William Ware. Ware\, who founded the schools of architecture at Columbia and MIT\, in turn took his cues from the Renaissance treatise of the architect Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola. \nThis event is hosted by an ICAA Chapter. Please check the Chapter website\, or contact the Chapter directly\, for the most up-to-date details including dates\, times\, and pricing. \nWhat you will learn\nAt the end of the course participants will be able to: \n\nA brief introduction of the classical orders\nA history of the Doric Order\, showing its evolution and variations from Antiquity to the Present\nA look at the application of the Doric Order to actual buildings and design elements\nTo learn a system for laying out the Doric Order for a given set of dimensions in which individual components are proportioned as units of measure based on column diameter.\nExplore syntax related to using the Doric Order in architectural design including the pediment and intercolumniation\n\nInstructor\nDavid B. Case
