DESCRIPTION:Counts towards the Certificate in Classical Architecture.\nFee: $100 \nInstructor: Martin Brandwein AIA and ICAA Fellow\nTeaching Assistant: David Case\, Architect \nPlease click here to register and pay by Credit Card \nCourse Description: The elements of classical architecture include the formalized canon of proportioning systems and geometries for the classical orders that has guided the practice of classical architecture since antiquity. Collectively\, the classical orders present a spectrum of complexity in detail and proportional relationships\, and a tectonic ordering system that is employed in the design of all classical structures.\nThis course examines in detail the Ionic order type as systemized by Vignola\, a Renaissance architect. Through freehand drawing\, participants will learn how to layout the column\, entablature\, and volute. An illustrated lecture will highlight key elements and built examples of the order. \nCourse Format: The course includes both lecture and studio instruction. The instructor will provide step by step instruction to drawing the Ionic order as students follow in their notebooks. A PowerPoint presentation will provide the students with images of the order. \nLearning Objectives:  \n\n\n\nStudents will be able to layout the entire Ionic order and understand the proportional relationships of the parts to the whole.\nStudents will able to draw the Ionic volute using a compass.\nStudents will be introduced to the syntax and compositional principles related to using the Ionic order in architectural design.\nStudents will examine the variations of the Ionic order and its usage in actual buildings.\n\n\n\nMaterials:\nStudents should work on large format unlined paper. An 11” x 14” spiral bound sketchbook that can be opened and laid flat is ideal.
