The lecture Drawing and Place: Documenting the City is presented by Adib Cure and Carie Penabad, both faculty members at the University of Miami School of Architecture. It explores the role of drawing as a tool for understanding, documenting, and preserving architecture, honoring the legacy of Teofilo Victoria. Victoria believed that drawing was not just a means of representation but a process of analysis and engagement. In collaboration with Jorge Hernandez, Cure, and Penabad, he helped develop the Drawing and Place assignment as part of the first-semester core curriculum at the University of Miami. Victoria introduced the Manuale di Recupero di Roma as a reference, recognizing its methodological rigor in documenting and preserving Rome’s architectural fabric. By applying similar techniques, students analyzed Coral Gables, a city shaped by the City Beautiful Movement. The lecture underscores how drawing fosters a deeper connection to the built environment and its history.
CÚRE & PENABAD is a Miami-based firm led by founding principals Adib Cúre and Carie Penabad. Their work emphasizes the integration of architecture and urban design as a unified exploration, blending inquiry and realization, poetry and practicality, history and invention. Their designs reflect the diverse cultural influences of Colombia, where Cúre was born; Cuba, where Penabad’s ancestors are from; and the United States, where they both studied at the University of Miami School of Architecture and Harvard Graduate School of Design.
The firm has received numerous awards including over 30 American Institute of Architects awards and state and local preservation awards. They were also finalists for the distinguished Marcus Prize and recipients of the prestigious Emerging Voices award from the Architectural League of New York, recognizing their unique design voice and significant body of work.
In addition to their design practice, Cúre and Penabad are active in academia, teaching at the University of Miami School of Architecture. They have also held teaching positions at Northeastern University, the Boston Architectural Center, and Yale University, where they served as the William Henry Bishop Visiting Professors (2024) and the Louis I. Kahn Visiting Assistant Professors of Architectural Design. Their publications include Marion Manley: Miami’s First Woman Architect (University of Georgia Press, 2010), Call to Order: Sustaining Simplicity in Architecture (ORO Publishers, 2018), and the upcoming Made in Miami/Hecho en Miami (ACTAR Publishers, 2025). Penabad also hosts the international radio show ON CITIES, broadcast through the Voice America network and available on all podcast platforms. For more information, visit cureandpenabad.com
