DESCRIPTION:Windsor – Home & Garden Tour & Panel Discussion\n3 credits towards the Certificate in Classical Architecture (Elective) | 3 AIA CES Learning Units | HSW\nParticipants will arrive at the Town Hall of the New Urbanist town of Windsor\, FL.  From here they will be shuttled down to the South Village where they will visit and tour several homes and gardens of different housing typologies designed by Merrill\, Pastor & Colgan Architects\, Fernando Wong Outdoor Living\, & The Associates Studio\, and Moor Baker Architects.   From 3:30-5:00 pm a panel discussion between Luis Van Cotthem\, F. Xavier Iglesias\, Isaac Stein\, and moderated by Jorge Hernandez will take place in the Windsor Town Hall\, designed by famed urbanist Leon Krier.  The panel will discuss the unique urbanism of Windsor\, with special focus on the new North Village expansion\, and the means by which the relatively new\, and still developing town\, has proven exemplary with respect to its urbanism.  \nSchedule:\nThursday\, February 20\, 2025 \nHouse & Garden Tours\n1:00 – 3:00 pm \nLecture at Town Hall\n3:30 – 5:00 pm \nCocktail Reception in Gallery\n5:30 – 6:15 pm \nDinner at the Club\n6:30 – 8:30 pm\nNote: Arrive promptly at 1:00 pm\, and park at Town Hall. Xavier Iglesias\n\n \nIsaac Stein\n\n\n  \n  \nJorge L. Hernandez\nJorge L. Hernandez is a professor and practitioner of Architecture. Born in Havana\, Cuba in 1956\, he immigrated to Miami in 1961. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Miami and his Master of Architecture from the University of Virginia. He has been a professor of Architecture at the University of Miami since 1987. Jorge has lectured extensively\, has taught for the Prince of Wales School of Architecture\, and his work has been published internationally. In 1996 he was selected to be one of 40 architects featured in that decade’s 40 Under 40. He collaborated with Vincent Scully on Between Two Towers: The Drawings of the School of Miami\, and has a monograph entitled Casas/Houses: Jorge L. Hernandez. Some of his projects include transit oriented mixed-use projects\, master plans\, courthouses\, planned campuses and religious buildings\, restorations of historic public buildings\, and over 40 custom residences. Jorge has served on numerous national\, state and local boards and agencies. Most notably\, he was Vice Chair of the National Trust for Historic Preservation\, an advisor of the Dade Heritage Trust\, Chair of the State of Florida Historic Preservation Advisory Council\, and a Trustee of the Florida Trust among others. His professional and research interests lie at the juncture between residential\, civic and landscape architecture\, with particular focus on the preservation of American architecture. \n\nLuis van Cotthem\, Architect SCA\, Acc.CNU\, Acc.LEED NC\, Florida Real Estate DVPR.\nLuis Van Cotthem is the owner of Smart Elegance\, a consulting firm based in Vero beach\, dedicated to conceive Urban Designs\, Form Based Codes and Architectural Design. Over his professional life\, Luis’s practice has ranged from urban design and architectural Form-Based Codes and Building Placement Standards to architectural design with projects such as 12 pedestrian bridges in Bogota\, Colombia\, a Master plan for Pimlico Island in Bahamas\, several high end residential and office buildings in Colombia S.A. and a few houses in Vero Beach. Van Cotthem has been the Town-Planner of Windsor for 28 years\, being involved in the evolution and completion of the urban design of the community\, its Architectural Code and Building Placement Standards including its last stage\, the North Village. In addition\, he has administered the Code and assisted in the design and construction of more than 250 homes of the community. On the other hand\, he is\ncurrently assisting other communities located in Florida and Texas as their town-Planner\, conceiving and administering their Architectural Code and Building Placement Standards. Lately\, his professional practice has taken him to design and codify small communities with private residences in rural areas in Florida preserving and enhancing the original character of the land. Luis has always been actively involved with academia. First as a T.A. at the university of Miami while doing his Masters\, and later as a professor of upper level urban design studio in urban renewal and retrofitting at the school of architecture of Universidad Javeriana and more recently as a Visiting Critic for upper and graduate level Design Studio at the school of Architecture of both the University of Miami and Universidad Javeriana. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá Colombia and his Master of Architecture in suburbia and\nTown design from the University of Miami\, where he also was given the Outstanding Masters of Architecture Student award. He has lectured at several colleges and Universities and his work has appeared in several specialized design magazines and books over the years. Luis compliments his professional activities acquiring and remodeling small properties with architectural interest in urban areas and playing tennis. \n\nF. Xavier Iglesias\, CNU-A\nXavier\, a senior officer at DPZ Co-DESIGN\, is a planner and architectural designer with over thirty years of experience. His expertise includes master plans and design regulations across the transect\, from rural villages to downtown revitalizations\, for developers\, not-for-profit organizations and municipalities in the US and abroad. Xavier leads DPZ’s Healthcare Initiative involving campus and community plans for major regional hospital systems\, and has most recently managed the master plan for the Naples Design District\, the vision plan for the Village of Key Biscayne\, and the design for the new North Village at Windsor in Vero Beach\, FL. \nHis architectural experience includes all phases of building design from feasibility studies and schematic design through construction documents and observation\, for a variety of building types\, from single and multi-family residential to educational\, medical and civic structures. Responsible for the creation of residential unit plans at Rosemary Beach and Alys Beach\, he has also helped design and manage many of DPZ’s key pocket communities.\nIn addition to directing the firm’s HR operations in Miami\, Iglesias also heads DPZ’s public relations\, coordinating publicity and awards. He edited the firm’s principal monographs\, Towns and Town-Making Principles (1991)\, The Architecture of Duany Plater-Zyberk and Company (2005)\, and the Richard H. Driehaus Prize Monograph (2008). He is currently writing a new book that will highlight the firm’s 40 plus years of pocket community design. \nIsaac Stein\nPLA\, RA\, ASLA – Design Principal\, Dept.\nIsaac Stein is a landscape architect from the Florida Panhandle. He is Design Principal at Dept.\, a landscape architecture and urban design studio based in Houston. He has expertise in the design and construction of complex open space and infrastructure projects\, including large public parks. Stein’s hands-on experience with large-scale site contracting\, earth work\, and utilities coordination gives him a deep understanding of implementation and constructability.\nStein has presented his research on coastal flooding and sea level rise to the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA)\, and at the University of Miami and the American Water Resources Conference. His mitigation and adaptation work has been published in the Miami Herald\, Vanity Fair and Next City. Prior to founding Dept.\, Stein was a design lead at West 8 Urban Design and Landscape Architecture in New York and Rotterdam where he worked on a range of projects including North Shore Open Space Park and the Miami Beach Convention Center.\nStein received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Miami where he was awarded the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Alpha Ro Chi Medal. He also holds a Master of Landscape Architecture and Master of Design Studies in Risk and Resilience from Harvard Graduate School of Design where he received the ASLA Certificate of Merit. He is a member of the ASLA Climate Action Group.
